Profile & Positions

Dr. Arun K. Tangirala is a Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at IIT Tirupati and serves as Dean (Competency Development & Outreach). He is also an Adjunct Professor at the Wadhwani School of Data Science & AI, IIT Madras, where he was formerly a faculty member from December 2004.

His research spans process systems engineering, data science & AI, signal processing, causal discovery in dynamical systems, and complex networks, with applications in process engineering, structures, intelligent transportation, agriculture, climate, and seismic systems.

He is the author of "Principles of System Identification: Theory and Practice" (CRC Press), a comprehensive graduate-level textbook widely used in academia and industry. He has co-authored a monograph on active control of buckling in structures.

Beyond research, Dr. Tangirala is actively engaged in institutional leadership — designing new academic programmes, leading outreach initiatives with CBSE schools, and building interdisciplinary capacity at IIT Tirupati.

AI-Powered Dyslexia Screening & Support
A joint initiative with the Madras Dyslexia Association (MDA) to build an AI-driven mobile app that screens and classifies dyslexia-based learning challenges in children, guides caregivers and teachers with level-appropriate remedial strategies, and delivers content for remote learners with special needs. MDA brings 30 years of domain expertise and has trained over 18,000 teachers; IIT Madras leads AI and data science development. Addresses a critical gap — no publicly available tool currently exists for remote screening and caregiver guidance for children with dyslexia.
